Ban trans-fats in restaurants: HCFI
Heart Care Foundation of India has urged banning of trans fats in the restaurants.
Trans fats have been a staple in the tastiest junk foods for more than 100 years. But Monday marked the end of the once-prevalent ingredient following the Food and Drug Administrations ban of artificial trans fats from American restaurants and grocery store food items. The FDA deemed trans fats unsafe in 2015, and gave companies until June 18, 2018 to eliminate the ingredient.
The FDA ban applies to artificial trans fats, which are made chemically by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil. (partially hydrogenated oil is also trans- fat.). Trans fat increases the shelf life of packaged foods, and restaurants like to use it as oil for deep frying because it doesnt need to be changed as often as other oils.
Trans fats increases the bad cholesterol and reduces the levels of good cholesterol in the blood.
New ICD Update
WHO has released the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) after more than 10 years in the making. ICD-11 is fully electronic, making it easier to use and less prone to errors. It contains 55,000 codes vs 14,400 in ICD-10.
ICD-11 will come into effect on January 1, 2022. It includes one chapter on traditional medicine, which has never been classified in this system.
Long germ PPI safe
“Thus, our findings do not support previous assumptions that long–term proton pump inhibitor use would be associated with an increased risk of hip fractures.” (Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2018;47(8):1135-1142)
Opioid Update
A National Institutes of Health-funded study found that treatment of opioid use disorder with either methadone or buprenorphine following a nonfatal opioid overdose is associated with significant reductions in opioid related mortality. The research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, was co-funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, both parts of NIH.
Mosquitos why they are selective in their bite
A study, conducted by researchers at Virginia Tech, confirmed that mosquitoes remember the taste and smell of human blood and often pick on individuals whose blood is “sweeter” to them.
They also remember the defensive measures taken against them. The brain chemical dopamine plays a role in a mosquito learning which hosts to attack and which to avoid.
Mosquitoes learn which individuals to attack and which to leave alone with aversive learning. The full study was published Feb. 5, 2018 in the journal Current Biology.
Smoking
Smoking has hit an all-time low in the US, government figures show. Just 13.9 percent of US adults smoked in 2017, down from about 15.5 percent the year before, according to a report from the CDC. Teens are smoking less than ever before as well, with rates down to just nine percent among high school students.
Exercise for the elderly
25% of your muscle mass is gone by age 70 — a major reason people lose their independence — and most people who break a hip never fully regain their independence.
The U.S. could soon have its first marijuana-derived medicine.
The drug is called Epidiolex. It is made from a component of cannabis that doesnt get users high, also known as CBD oils. Epidiolex would be sold at pharmacies and would only be available for kids who have severe epilepsy.
Alcohol Quantity
The United States places an upper limit of 196g a week or approximately 11 glasses of wine or pints of beer. Canada places the limit at 15 drinks a week, while in Italy, Portugal, and Spain, the recommended limits are even higher.
A recent study published in The Lancet finds that the limit should be drawn much lower than the current American recommendation. The study brought together data from 599,912 alcohol drinkers from 83 separate studies in 19 different high-income countries. The researchers surveyed individuals on the amount of alcohol they consumed over a twelve-month period and tracked the number of death amongst the participants. Around half of participants reported consuming more than 100g of alcohol each week, and 8.4% drank more than 350g a week
When researchers compared alcohol consumption and risks of premature death, they found that all causes of death, cardiovascular or otherwise, increased when the participants drank more than 100g of alcohol a week. High alcohol consumption was associated with increased risks of stroke, coronary diseases, heart failure, fatal hypertensive diseases and fatal aortic aneurisms. (The Lancet. 391: 1513-1523.)
